Formed through the merger between the Danish MD Foods and the Swedish Arla in the spring of 2000, Arla Foods is Europe's largest dairy company, owned by 12.700 Danish and Swedish dairy farmers.
Arla Foods produces the entire spectrum of dairy products including milk, cheese, butter and milk powder. The Arla Foods products are sold in markets across the world under brand names as Lurpak which, over the past 100 years, has become the Danish dairy industry's flagship in export markets.
Research and development
Innovation is at the heart of Arla Foods’ strategy – the group launches 200 products across its markets every year. Arla has a team of 220 staff employed within R&D. Recent examples of innovation includes a range of dairy products for use in NASA space shuttles and space stations, a milk-based low-calorie sweetener, tagatose, which obtained the American GRAS approval last in Spring 2001, a new line of snack-based dairy products to extend the demand for milk products at meals throughout the day.
